When a key is placed in the ignition of a VW vehicle and turned, the vehicle checks that a key containing a transponder with the right code is present. If the car’s ECU cannot detect the right chip, an ‘immobiliser’ on the vehicle cuts off the engine’s fuel supply and prevents the vehicle from starting. The immobiliser security feature was introduced to all new Volkswagen vehicles by law following a car crime epidemic of Joyriding & vehicle theft (known as “TWOKing” in the early Nineties.)
Car Keys on Volkswagen cars made in the Nineties featured a separate immobilizer box concealed behind the dashboard. Later VW models relied on a new generation of security integrated with the clock behind the vehicle dashboard. Some modern Volkswagen vehicles feature a different security system based on a proximity car key security system. Volkswagen models featuring this system are branded by Volkswagen as Keyless Entry & Keyless Start or KESSY vehicles.
Warning: Second hand or recylced chips and keys purchased via Ebay or the internet will NOT start a Volkswagen vehicle – unless the key has been diagnostically paired to the car using dealer-standard diagnostic equipment. Keys are programmed using a unique 4-digit security code relating to the specific vehicle held on Volkswagen’s central database. Official Volkswagen dealerships rely on this code to programme new keys for customers.
Independent Volkswagen Car Key Specialists such as AutoKey Squad can use sophisticated dealer-standard diagnostic tools to extract this code from the engine itself and programme new VW keys instantly at the roadside as opposed to the dealer that needs to order the key from the manufacturer’s plant, process which may take up to 10 working days. AutoKey Squad can normally gain entry to any Volkswagen vehicle even if it is deadlocked shut and all the keys are missing, broken or trapped.
VW owners can save on high-street Dealership Car Key charges by buying from an independent Volkswagen Car Key Specialist such as AutoKey Squad. Also, VW motorists who have lost all their keys should use a mobile Roadside Car Key technician who will cut a new car key and/or remote control fob at the roadside. This will avoid tow-charges of ferrying the vehicle to a main dealership on a low-loader.
Autokey Squad never compromises on quality and all our experienced technicians carry the latest diagnostic equipment on-board to ensure our workmanship on your Volkswagen vehicle is completed to highest possible standard.
Our overheads are lower than many franchised car dealerships with expensive showrooms – meaning we can often deliver cost savings to customers who buy directly from us.
The bottom line is AutoKey Squad can supply you with high-quality car keys for your Volkswagen vehicle cheaper than many leading high-street forecourts or garages because our overheads are lower. AutoKey Squad’s VW car key experts can also assist Volkswagen vehicle owners with broken or snapped Volkswagen Key problems. And all our work is covered by a 100% peace of mind money-back guarantee.
Spare VW Key Duplication Service
If you bought your Volkswagen vehicle second hand and it only came with one key, Autokey Squad strongly recommends that you purchase a second set of keys so if one of them gets misplaced or breaks apart, you will still have a backup set. If you could drive to our shop in Highgate, North London (248 Archway Road, London, N65 AX), you can get a spare key created by one of our technicians while you wait. The prices are aprox. 30% lower than our Mobile service ones and up to 70% lower than what the Dealers charge.
Just to give you an idea of our Discount Shop prices, Volkswagen basic keys can cost as little as £57 including VAT and programming.
If you would like to get a quote or book an appointment (highly recommended to ensure a technician is available when you arrive) get in touch with our shop staff by calling 0203 588 0420
The Inside Track from a Volkswagen Car Key Specialist:
Below, AutoKey Squad Volkswagen car key expert David Jackson, from Hackney, East London, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Volkswagen car key technology and security features, exploding some of the most popular misconceptions:
“Some of the first VW models fitted with transponder chip keys were equipped with separate immobiliser boxes that were physically separated from the car’s ECU. The systems were introduced after transponder chips and immobiliser systems started to be introduced into car security systems in the mid-Nineties. The ECU is an abbreviation for the Electronic Control Unit – it’s the computer that basically functions as the Volkswagen’s brain and decides whether to allow the engine to start etc.
Cars manufactured after the M-plate were fitted with immobiliser systems which needed to recognise a small transponder chip embedded deep into the head of the key itself. As time wore on, VW manufacturers began to introduce a new immobiliser system that worked in conjunction with the clock on the car’s dashboard. Lately, the cycle has turned full circle and many of the latest models are using separate immobiliser boxes again, just like in the very early days. Key programming for the Volkswagen works slightly differently.
Even once an AutoKey Squad technician has cut a new key for your vehicle which fits the door locks and ignition barrel, it still won’t allow the VW engine to start. Motorists need a unique 4 digit security code to programme the key correctly. This security code is very difficult to obtain from Volkswagen dealers these days without specialist contacts in the motor trade. However, here at AutoKey Squad we use specialist diagnostic software to extract the key code from the vehicle’s on board computer.
Once your AutoKey Squad technician has extracted the code for your Volkswagen, he can programme your brand-new low-cost high quality replacement VW key so it works just like the original key which was supplied with the vehicle when brand new. It means that once you have inserted your new VW key supplied by AutoKey Squad, the vehicle will recognise the new key as valid and allow the vehicle to start. It works because the transponder in the head of the key transmits a special code to the car that allows it to start the engine.
The forefront of the technology is keyless access. The latest high end models don’t even need to be put in the ignition. Instead, the VW owner’s key is identified by special sensors in the door handle. The special technology even releases the steering lock and allows the ignition to spark into life electronically – without a key even being inserted! As long as the VW owner has the key with him, he can start the car by pressing a button on the dashboard. It’s that simple. When you leave the car, all you need to do is to press a special lock button contained in the door handles!
If you have any more questions about your VW car key, please don’t hesitate to give our head office a ring on 0800 999 0121. If I can’t speak to you I promise one of my VW specialist colleagues will do his very best to help! I hope you get back on the road as soon as possible.”
