All Nissan Cars sold since 1995 are equipped with a factory-fitted immobiliser system linked to a small glass chip embedded in the car key. The chips inside every Nissan Car Key are “programmed” to a particular unique vehicle. The way this works is, your Nissan immobiliser system searches electronically for a valid, pre-registered transponder chip whenever a key is inserted into the ignition and turned. If the correct chip is present, the immo system will allow the Nissan vehicle to start. If the immo system fails to detect a chip the fuel supply to the engine is cut off (within 5 seconds)
The small glass chip embedded in the plastic part of Nissan car keys operates on one of two different coding systems, most modern Nissan Car Keys being protected by a “crypto coding system”. Thus, it is normally impossible to bypass, override or remove a Nissan immobiliser and still drive the vehicle.
Replacing or Duplicating a Nissan key is a three stage process:
- Step 1: A new key blade (either a traditional car key or a laser remote control flip key) must be cut accurately to unlock the doors and fit the ignition.
- Step 2: The transponder chip inside the replacement Car Key must be “paired” to your Nissan vehicle.
- Step 3: If you opted for a remote fob, this will involve a different programming procedure.
Warning! Second hand or recycled chips and keys purchased via Ebay or the internet will NOT start a Nissan vehicle – unless the key has been diagnostically paired to the car using dealer-standard diagnostic equipment.
If you have lost or broken all your car keys or just need a spare, probably your guts feeling is to go to the dealer. However, this might not be the best option for you. Not only you will incur the very high dealership charges, but also, the dealer will ask you to have your vehicle transported on a tow truck to their base.
Then, they will order a new key from overseas, from a Nissan plant. This may take up to 15 working days. Eventually, when your car keys have arrived, you will be asked to transport your vehicle once again to their base so the key fob that has been ordered will be synchronized to your vehicle. You will also be charged separately for this procedure.
In some occasions, you may find yourself in a situation where the whole lock & ignition system of the car need to be replaced which could potentially turn into a very high bill.
AutoKey Squad’s experienced and professional Car Key Specialists can usually produce a fully-working new Key and/or remote fob blip for your vehicle at the roadside – even if you have lost all your security/key codes provided with the original vehicle paperwork. Car Key Specialists offer better value on quality replacement Nissan Car Keys by cutting and programming a bespoke new key to the existing lock barrels and immobiliser. This means that the existing locks don’t need to be replaced.
The way our service works is our trained specialists in Nissan car keys will visit your vehicle wherever it is located at a time that suits you – and supply and programme a new car key for your Nissan vehicle while you wait. They will supply a brand new quality key, cut a fresh blade, and programme a new transponder chip so that it works seamlessly with the immobiliser system. Our experienced technicians can also usually supply a remote control fob just like your original key if required.
Also, a Nissan Car Key Specialist can usually extract a snapped key from inside the lock and cut a replacement on the spot if a Nissan key or remote control fob has become trapped.
Autokey Squad never compromises on quality and all our experienced technicians carry the latest diagnostic equipment on-board to ensure our workmanship on your Nissan
vehicle is completed to highest possible standard.
Our overheads are lower than many franchised car dealerships with expensive showrooms – meaning we can often deliver cost savings to customers who buy directly from us.
Save Money: Very old Nissan Car Keys (manufactured prior to 1995) often contain no transponder chip. This significantly reduces the cost of new car keys for this age of vehicle.
All AutoKey Squad work carries a full money-back guarantee, assuring 100% peace of mind and quality workmanship.
If you purchased your Nissan second hand, you might have just 1 key that starts the engine. Should this be your case, Autokey Squad strongly recommends that you purchase a second set of keys so in case of an emergency or if the key that you currently have gets lost, you still have a backup set. Getting a spare key produced in advance can save you more than £100 if you unfortunately lost your existing Nissan key.
If you have time, and can drive to our Discount Shop in Highgate, North London (248 Archway Road, London, N65 AX), you can get a spare key created here by one of our technicians while you wait. Prices are aprox. 30% lower than our Mobile service and up to 70% lower than what the Dealers charge.

“Most of the first Nissan models fitted with transponder chip keys were equipped with red-key system. The most important key was the red master key. This key is used to programme all the other keys which are authorised for the vehicle into the ECU (The ECU is an abbreviation for the Electronic Control Unit – it’s the computer that basically functions as the Nissan’s brain and decides whether to allow the engine to start etc.). The systems were introduced after transponder chips and immobiliser systems started to be introduced into car security systems in the mid-Nineties.
Many of our customers are relieved to see us – before calling us they often think that the only way to buy a new key is to approach the main dealership. These dealers have expensive showrooms and forecourts to maintain so by dealing direct with Nissan customers over the internet, we can usually save them some real wonga! As Nissan Car Key Specialists, my company AutoKey Squad can genuinely offer customers massive savings totalling up to hundreds of pounds if a customer has lots all their Nissan keys. We come to the customer’s vehicle to cut a replacement key, whereas Nissan Dealerships will normally ask a motorist to get their vehicle to a dealer on a low-loader.
Each job is a bit different. My first challenge is usually gaining entry to the vehicle if a customer has lost all their keys. I use proprietary techniques taught by AutoKey Squad over the years to achieve this without leaving any evidence of my work on the vehicle. It’s another reason it’s worth hiring a professional firm of Nissan Car Key Specialists such as my employer AutoKey Squad. I wouldn’t want to run the risk of letting some cowboy white van man Transit driver damage the vehicle I need to rely on every day…
There’s also another factor at play here. Because all AutoKey Squad technicians are qualified lock specialists, we can work with the customer’s existing locks. We cut and create a brand new replacement Nissan key which fits the existing door locks and ignition barrel. After that, we use dealer-standard diagnostic tools to programme a small glass transponder chip into the Nissan vehicle’s ECU.
I’ve heard many cases of Nissan dealers booking an appointment four days later to supply a replacement car key. We pride ourselves on supplying new car keys to customers within a few hours. In fact this week, I even managed to help a Micra customer and rung his doorbell while he was still on the phone to HQ. It was pure luck that I had been donig some work at a Car Auction round the corner. But it was an example of how we like to go out of our way to impress – and even delight – customer whenever we can.”
REMEMBER: Using an independent Car Key Specialist like Autokey Squad will typically save you around £40-£50 on dealership prices. AutoKey Squad can supply you with high-quality car keys for your Nissan vehicle wherever your vehicle is located and at a time convenient to you. This includes out-of-hours appointments during evenings, weekends or early mornings at no extra charge.
