All vehicles sold in England after 1995 had to contain a passive microchip called transponder chip inside them by law. As opposed to most of the vehicles on the market, Ford vehicles (mainly manufactured since the the early 2000′s) are no longer programmed using “fixed” transponder chips. The current generation of Ford vehicles use a rolling and crypto coded system which ensures a different security code is presented by the key to the engine every time the vehicle is started.
The security features of your Ford car key are controlled by an on-board computer called an ‘ECU’. This is an abbreviation for the “Engine Control Unit”. The computer effectively acts as the brain of your Ford vehicle.
Ford customers whose car keys have been stolen or misplaced at an unknown location are advised to ensure that at the same time as a replacement key is purchased the missing/stolen key is also deregistered from the ECU. This simple step will render the missing key useless to thieves who will be unable to start the vehicle with a deregistered key. This measure should be offered by all reputable Ford Car Key specialists and is offered as a complimentary service by all AutoKey Squad technicians.

Moreover, our skilled technicians work at the roadside to cut, programme & supply new Ford keys at your vehicle while you wait as opposed to the dealers that may ask for your vehicle to be towed to their base and then require up to 10 working days for your key to be ordered & shipped from abroad.
Inside Tip: The papework supplied by your Ford dealer when you purchased your car will often contain a “key code”. If you can supply this information to a Ford car key specialists (for example an AutoKey Squad technician) this can make the key replacement process faster and cheaper. Many Ford vehicles contain the key code hidden on the lock barrel itself. If the lock barrel is removed from the tailgate it may be possible to view the code. WARNING: You are advised to leave this task to a Ford car key specialist unless you are experienced in handling Ford locking systems as it very easy to damage the lock tumblers if a mistake is made during the extraction process.
“Unfortuantely, the major car makers are locked into a constant game of cat and mouse with organised vehicle crime. That means that every make of vehicle – including Fords – relies on a baffling array of different technologies and coding system to ensure the immobiliser is effective against thieves.
We can provide a solution to Ford owners with virtually any problem with a Ford Car Key or remote control fob. We can also help if Ford owners remote control blip has stopped working, or if they have lost their remote key. We can even supply and programme the very latest Ford Proximity keys – where drivers keep the keys in their pocket without putting them in the ignition.
Different models of car sold by the same manufacturer with apparently identical keys are often protected by entirely different coding systems. And sometimes the same model of car – sold in the same year can still be protected by very different immobiliser technology. My colleagues at AutoKey Squad are dedicated to keeping abreast of the latest developments, especially on the very latest vehicles, but it’s virtually a full-time job.
There is a huge range of different technology being used dating back to around 1995 when the immobiliser chip was first introduced around the K registration. Back then it was called the PATS system – passive anti-theft system. Early Ford car keys used what was called a red chip system. Those early Ford car keys contained a clear glass transponder chip which was buried inside the plastic head of the key. The chip was paired to the ECU (the engine control unit) which basically acts as the vehicle’s brain. Only when the car’s “brain” was sure the key with the right chip was inserted in the lock, would it allow the engine to start. There’s an easy way to spot these type of keys – you’ll notice a small red tab of plastic on the top right hand corner of the key – how it got it’s name. Some of the keys are even entirely red. That was the original Ford master key system used on three key red systems. Later, as the battle with the crooks developed, Ford moved to another glass transpnder system. The signal for this was a blue chip in the plastic head of the key. The most modern Ford keys still boast the blue tab, but they usually feature a black carbon chip. It’s much more advance and can feature rolling and crypto coding systems which require the latest diagnostic tools to bypass.”
If your Ford vehicle only has one key that starts the engine, Autokey Squad strongly recommends that you purchase a second set of keys so in case of an emergency or if the key that you currently have gets lost, you still have a backup set. Being proactive can save you more than £100 if you unfortunately lost access to your vehicle. If you have time, and can drive to our Discount Shop in Highgate, North London (248 Archway Road, London, N65 AX), you can get a spare key created here by one of our technicians while you wait.
